Lots of questions have been finding ample time to ferment in the back of my mind, eventually growing large enough to slide to the front and cause me much havoc. Questions regarding the spiritual life; questions like, "What, exactly, is idolatry, and how do you know if you idolize something?" And, "If we are to deny ourselves, does it mean we must deny our passions - passions being, for instance, music or reading or hiking?" I know these sound like foolish questions, but they are the questions pressing upon me. If anyone has any word(s) of advice, I'd like you to pass it on to me. These have really been bugging me over the last few days.

idolatry - putting something in your life ahead of God. someone, something (money, house, car, tv, time, hobby)
deny ourselves - get rid of the selfish "things" that we put ahead of God.
does your passion detract from your relationship with God?
How does one tell if his - or her - passion detracts from the relationship with God? It would be seen through the way we live our lives, right?
are you spending more time with God in prayer/His Word then you are in "music, reading, hiking, hobbies, etc"?
does the "way you live" reflect giving a priority to God over the "music, reading, hiking, etc"?
is the #1 priority of each day scheduling and spending time with God, or is it scheduling and spending time on "music, reading, hiking,hobbies, etc"
are you giving God the first 10% of your gross income or are you giving him the leftovers after you give uncle sam his share, save for your retirement, and spend your money on your own interests - "music, reading, hiking, hobbies, etc"
ya know the old saying, you can tell alot about a person by how they spend their time and their money
i don't think there is a set measurement, but each of us, in our own heart know where we put God in our lives - and so does God
